I was after a larger 13mm 3FNC rocket for park flying. I did not like any of the available kits so I built this....

Very sleek! The fins look very fine. What are they made from?

Looks good, can you put something next to it so we can get an idea of its size?

The fins are just standard 3/32" balsa, I sketched the shape I liked then cut them out. diesel wrote: very nice looking rocket well done. did you scratch build the hole thing e.g. the body tube , nose cone...... Nah, I'm not good enough to scratch the body tube or nosecone, they came out of an old Estes designers box of parts. Sumo310 wrote: Looks good, can you put something next to it so we can get an idea of its size? I can take another photo tomorrow if you like but it is a simple BT5 body using a full 18" tube. The motor will stick out about 1/4" and I'll tape it to the body tube to secure it. krusty wrote: That's really great!! Love the paint job Is that metallic black?
Hmmm, metallic black, I should have thought of that...No it is a gloss black base with a cheap gold flake paint, full coverage over the fins and graded out down the body tube. I was just trying something different to see how it would come out.
Your compliments are high praise indeed for such a simple rocket, but I am pleased at how it came out. I'll probably fly it soon if the wind dies down before I have to go back to the Tanami. The rocksim I did on it says it will reach about 285' on a 1/2A and around 600' on an A. I think that will be optimistic myself...

The Valor rocket used fiddly bits grey undercoat with the silver on top coming from a $3 sample pot from the interior paint range at bunnings! You'd be surprised - those 13mm A's pack quite a punch in the min diameter rockets. I've got a thunderbee that would do every bit of 600' !

Krusty Well Krusty, you were right, it flew great on a 1/2A and even better with an A...pity the wind was a little strong - so much so that on an A with a streamer it drifted into the long weeds and was lost I'll have to build another one of those! RIP

I have lost a couple skinny 13mm rockets in the past... they just scream into the air, disappear and are never seen again. Maybe you should build several!

Reminds me of this: Losing a rocket is a bummer, but at least with a scratchie you've only lost a few $$'s worth of parts and not $15+ with a kit Krusty

On the good side Krusty, I did get to play around with my new camera getting launch shots....it seems to work quite well. I figured that if I could get photos of the small stuff, it it will be even better for shots at Serpentine!

My sincere condolences on your loss... Would a longer streamer help find it in the reeds? Won't slow the descent proportionally, but draped over LZ it would be easier to spot!

With your new camera, you may even give David a run for his money I got a new 8GB memory card for my camera the other day - nice quick 60MB/s ! 'tis sweet!! Krusty

Fast 8 gig...sweet I ended up getting a second card for mine...as I have both SD and CF slots and the camera can handle both at the same time it means I can go crazy at a launch in high fame rate mode without worrying about space. Maybe we should open a rocket photography thread
